Washington Football Team name has staying power

When Washington’s NFL franchise chose to drop its longstanding label in 2015, it placed a placeholder that was so dull and dull it didn’t appear genuine: Washington Football Group.

Initially, it sounded absurd. It resembled the marketing department employee in charge of turning up with a name forgot to do the task, and when challenged by the employer, the staff member blurted out, “Ah, Washington … Football Team?”

Then, throughout the 2020 season, it grew on me.

The group is surveying fans looking for a brand-new name. I’m neither a fan nor have I been asked, however if I was I’d highly think about making the interim name, or something near to it, the long-term one.

The only objection is that when the Washington Football Group is abbreviated to WFT it looks excessive like WTF which indicates something improper for a household item — although maybe reflective of the group’s current fortunes.

So possibly Washington Football Club — WFC? It sounds cool (a minimum of to me). It likewise suggestions a cap to European soccer while still taking the name of the sport in a really American style.

In the fan studies, each individual was revealed a list of 10 possible names. Various individuals got various lists (this isn’t a straight democratic vote). Based upon social networks posts, the existing list being thought about consists of:

Devil Felines

First City Football Club (FCFC)

Red Hogs

Washington DC Football Club (DCFC)

Wild Hogs

32FC (W32)

Football Group

So obviously some variations of WFC, and even WFT, are in the running. The group fasts to keep in mind that these aren’t the prospective names.

Per group president Jason Wright, they are utilizing “focus groups, stakeholder interviews, large-scale surveys, and other qualitative and quantitative approaches to understand what fans want and what types of names resonate with our fans.”

As such, if a great deal of individuals like a name that can be shortened, then maybe they’ll go with an abbreviation. Ditto with an animal. Some are too painfully apparent — Presidents? Some make no sense as the United States released itself from the Monarchs (unless we’re talking butterflies here). And when was the last time a Razorback was seen in D.C.?

Whatever. This is a multibillion dollar business attempting to rebrand itself on the fly. It isn’t as simple as it looks. Washington has stated it wants to have a brand-new name by the start of the 2022 season, so a minimum of there is no instant rush.

European soccer tends to put the concentrate on the city represented, although abbreviations or labels can naturally emerge. Football Club Barcelona is frequently simply called Barcelona or Barca. Liverpool Football Club can be Liverpool, LFC or “The Reds” based upon the dominant color of the package.

In America, the custom is to have a label, a mascot, all sorts of things. It’s difficult to think of, for instance, the Lakers being referred to as the Los Angeles Basketball Club or the Red Sox the Boston Baseball Group. Specific labels invoke their own aura — the Packers, the Yankees, the Cowboys … and even the Load, the Yanks, the Boys.

Washington as soon as had that also. Times modification though. Typically for the much better. So can names. And if absolutely nothing else, going with something various, even if it emerged from something hurried and required, may not be so bad.

I am simply one vote who wasn’t even asked to vote, however Washington Football Club, or WFC, doesn’t sound regrettable to me.
