Over the weekend, a previous designer for Dambuster Studios (maker of Homefront: The Transformation and the descendant of the studio behind TimeSplitters 2) exposed his preferred Easter egg: A complete variation of TimeSplitters 2 — in native 4K, even — playable inside Homefront: The Transformation. Issue was, he forgot the cheat code to open it!

Well, issue fixed! Modder/hacker Lance McDonald set to work reverse-engineering Homefront: The Transformation’s menus to determine the method, later on recognizing that “emulation ninja” (and Xbox principal software application engineer) Spencer Perreault had currently tweeted it out on Thursday. (A tipster informed Polygon it originates from this Discord group.)

To avoid to the chase, here is the unlock series:

It had actually been understood because Homefront: The Transformation’s 2016 launch that Dambuster designers had actually slipped 2 playable TimeSplitters 2 levels (Siberia and Chicago, to be accurate) into the Homefront world, in the type of a game cabinet inside a resistance hideout:

Matt Phillips, a Crytek alumnus who’s now a developer on the console variation of Rust, exposed that the entire thing was packed inside Homefront: The Transformation, so gamers might play a video game while they played a video game. Astoundingly, this isn’t simply an imitated variation of a video game that was 14 years of ages at the time Homefront was launched; it’s a native 4K port of stated video game.

Funny thing is, Phillips stated he lost the unlock code — the note pad he’d composed it down in went missing out on years back. “I once gave it to a friend to leak in some Discord channel,” Phillips stated, “and they called him a liar and banned his account, ahaha.”

Additionally, Philips consisted of a method to play TimeSplitters 2’s cooperative multiplayer! Kinda.

If you’re questioning the chain of custody here, and whether this develops a copyright problem, it doesn’t. Dambuster Studios was Crytek UK, and Crytek UK was Free Radical Style, makers of TimeSplitters, TimeSplitters 2, and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect from 2000 to 2005. Moving forward, THQ Nordic (by method of Koch Media) now owns the TimeSplitters IP, however don’t get your hopes up for a TimeSplitters 2 remake, in spite of what you might have heard.
