New wildfires in Kamloops Fire Centre, including 2 in North Okanagan

Fifteen new wildfires, sparked by an ongoing lightning storm, are burning in the Kamloops Fire District, with two in the North Okanagan and one well east of Kelowna. “These fires are being actioned by crews and aerial reconnaissance is being used to assess these fires,” the BC Wildfire Service said Friday morning.Of the 15, 12 were discovered on Friday, with three found on Thursday. Cooling centres open across the Okanagan except in Kelowna – Okanagan

As summer heats up in the Okanagan, communities are taking steps to ensure residents have the opportunity to cool down. Cooling centres have opened in Penticton, Osoyoos, and the Shuswap region, and a pop-up spray park has opened in Vernon. Cost of being fire starter steep: Vernon RCMP

A grass fire sparked late Saturday night in Kalamalka Provincial Park may have been human-caused and it’s prompting a reminder of what’s a stake when people aren’t careful. A grass fire in Kalamalka Park broke out at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 9800 block of Coldstream Creek Road. RCMP said in a press release the fire was contained and extinguished quickly, though the origin is still under investigation.“We’ve received information from witnesses who have reported seeing a flare in the vicinity prior to the fire starting,” Const. Chris Terleski, for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.“It is under investigation and we’re certainly looking into the possibility that it may have been human-caused.” Trending Stories ...
