How exercise helps with Parkinson’s disease

PARK CITY, Utah — Parkinson’s disease is affecting more and more people across the nation. While there is no cure, one thing is showing promise in improving symptoms. Parkinson’s disease causes brain cells that make dopamine to stop working or die. Dopamine is a chemical that coordinates movement. Losing dopamine cells can create a tremor, cause stiffness, and even loss of balance. Dr. Kathleen Mckee, neurology specialist at Intermountain Health said while there is currently no drug or surgery that can slow down the disease, exercise does appear to help. “We know for sure that exercise improves their motor symptoms, and we have growing evidence that it probably slows down the disease,” she said. The fast movements of pedaling have made all the difference for La...

Alberta Transportation delays new rules on slowing to 60 km/h around roadside vehicles

Right now, only traffic in the adjacent lane has to slow to 60 km/h when passing stopped emergency vehicles with their lights flashing. It’s called the “Slow Down Move Over” legislation. That was set to expand under changes to Bill 5 on Wednesday, March 1, to have more roadside workers protected and force drivers in more lanes to slow down. But Alberta Transportation said late Tuesday afternoon more time is needed to make drivers aware of the upcoming changes, so things are being pushed back six months. The province said it will launch a robust education campaign to prevent unnecessary tickets and the amendments will now...

Making politics ‘for you’: Why Utah Rep. Sahara Hayes ran for office

Estimated read time: 4-5 minutesSALT LAKE CITY — As Utah's only openly gay legislator, Rep. Sahara Hayes was thrust into an emotional debate over LGBTQ rights early on in her first session. While the Legislature moved to ban transgender-related surgeries and puberty blockers for children last month, Hayes spoke against the effort, saying "someone very close to me is trans." She spoke of how hard it was for them to live "knowing you're never going to have the body you want."Hayes, D-Millcreek, knew she might need to address an issue like that, because it was a 2022 bill banning transgender girls from playing high school sports that prompted her to run in the first place."HB11 is actually a big reason why I ra...
