Kids to require parental consent to access social media apps under new Utah law

Children and teenagers in Utah are to lose access to social media apps such as TikTok if they don't have parental consent and would face other restrictions under a first-in-the-nation law designed to shield young people from the addictive apps. The two bills Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed into law also prohibit kids under 18 from using social media between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., require age verification for anyone who wants to use social media in the state and seek to prevent tech companies from luring kids to their apps using addictive features. The laws passed through Utah's GOP-supermajority Legislature reflect changing perceptions of both Democrats and Republicans toward technology companies. Tech giants like Facebook and Goog...

US Agencies Debunk Florida Surgeon General’s Vaccine Claims

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — U.S. health agencies have sent a letter to Florida's surgeon general, warning him that his claims about COVID-19 risks are harmful to the public. The letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was sent Friday to Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo.Ladapo was appointed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021 and has attracted national scrutiny over his close alignment with the governor in opposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other health policies embraced by the federal government.Ladapo last year released guidance recommending against COVID-19 vaccinations for healthy children, contradicting federal public health leaders whose advice says all kids should get the shots. He also has recommended against men ag...

California Company’s 3D Rocket Poised to Make Debut Launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A rocket made almost entirely of 3D parts was poised to blast off Wednesday on its debut launch.California-based Relativity Space is attempting to launch the rocket to orbit from Cape Canaveral. It’s a relatively small rocket, just 110 feet (33 meters), and won’t be carrying anything for this test flight.About 85% of the rocket, named Terran, is made of 3D parts printed at the company’s factory in Long Beach, California, including its engines. Relativity Space aims to increase that percentage on its future versions.SpaceX's Falcon rockets have been flying with 3D parts for years, but not nearly to the extent of Relativity Space's new rocket.Political CartoonsRelativity Space said its rocket is the largest 3D printed object to exist and attempt orbital flight.B...

Science And Technology Today More Labor Intensive Than Agriculture

(Photo by Lennart Preiss/Getty Images)Getty Images Labor costs today make up approximately two-thirds of U.S. business research and development (R&D), illustrating how vital access to high-skilled talent is to America’s economy. In comparison, only about 13% of input costs on U.S. farms for agricultural production, on average, are labor-related. (It’s 39% for specialty crops.) “Labor costs accounted for $372 billion of U.S. business research and development expenditures in 2020—or over two-thirds of the $538 billion in business R&D performance,” according to a recent report from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics. “In 2020, these labor costs included $300 billion in salaries, wages, a...

Sleep disorders are associated with more parental stress

Editor’s Note: Dr. Neha Chaudhary, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, is chief medical officer at BeMe Health and on the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. CNN  —  When I found out I was expecting my son a couple of years ago, it wasn’t the process of labor I was most terrified of — it was the sleep deprivation I knew I’d be facing with a newborn for months on end, without respite. As a physician, I had spent a decade of my life working overnights, 30+ hour on-call shifts and nights of sleep broken by the cringe-worthy beeping of my pager. I knew how my brain and I worked on the other side of no sleep. We were a b...

EU Inaugurates First Mainland Satellite Launch Port

KIRUNA, Sweden (AP) — The European Union wants to bolster its capacity to launch small satellites into space with a new launchpad in Arctic Sweden.European officials and Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf inaugurated the EU's first mainland orbital launch complex on Friday during a visit to Sweden by members of the European Commission, which is the 27-nation bloc's executive arm.The new facility at Esrange Space Center near the city of Kiruna should complement the EU’s current launching capabilities in French Guiana.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said small satellites are crucial to tracking natural disasters in real time and, in the light of Russia's war in Ukraine, to help guarantee global security.“Today, we know that the brave Ukrainian forces effectively use small sat...

Is China Sharing Enough COVID-19 Information?

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — As COVID-19 rips through China, other countries and the World Health Organization are calling on its government to share more comprehensive data on the outbreak. Some even say many of the numbers it's reporting are meaningless.Without basic data like the number of deaths, infections and severe cases, governments elsewhere have instituted virus testing requirements for travelers from China. Beijing has said the measures aren't science-based and threatened countermeasures.Of greatest concern is whether new variants will emerge from the mass infection unfolding in China and spread to other countries. The delta and omicron variants developed in places that also had large outbreaks, which can be a breeding ground for new variants. Here's a look at what's going on with Ch...

‘It’s beautiful’: Hoar frost covers southern Manitoba – Winnipeg

Southern Manitobans have been treated to beautiful scenes since the weekend as hoar frost turned the outdoors into a winter wonderland. Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips compares the frost to “snowflakes attached together.”“It’s a kind of feathery frost,” he said. “It’s light, it’s picturesque, I mean, it’s a photographer’s landscape.” Read more: Photographers capture hoar frost in Saskatchewan Read More Photographers capture hoar frost in Saskatchewan Phillips says hoar frost forms only when humidity is introduced to precise weather conditions; cold air, little to no wind, and clear skies. The moisture can come from a water source, such as a ...
