Young athletes test athletic ability at RBC Training Grounds – Calgary

Hundreds of young, local athletes put it all on the line Saturday during the Olympic talent search in Calgary. Rower Griffin Salmon was one of 200 athletes between the ages of 14 and 25 who showcased their athletic abilities at the RBC Training Grounds, hoping to get noticed.Salmon is hoping to rank in the top 100.“It is nerve-wracking, but I feel like that’s good. You get the extra adrenaline that helps you go faster, but it is for my future, so you know, I’m ready to do it,” he said.The program is aimed at testing athletes on their speed, agility, power and endurance. Team Saskatchewan athlete sacrificed other sports to specialize in rowing – Regina

Sixteen-year-old Brooklyn Schwab will represent her home province in the upcoming Canada Summer Games in Niagara in August, but her journey to this point did not come without some sacrifices along the way. Schwab had to make the tough decision to give up not only ringette, but softball as well, both of which she had been playing competitively since she was five years old.Schwab said that saying goodbye to ringette was less of a blow, as she had lost the spark for the game, but softball was tougher to drop.“It was one of my favourite sports that I’ve played,” said Schwab. “It’s just such a nice community, so it was hard to leave some of my friends, and to leave the game itself.
