What’s left to count in the House? Can Democrats hold the majority?

House Republicans are in position to reach the 218 seats they need to flip the chamber after the midterm elections. As of Saturday night, CBS News estimates Republicans will win at least 214 seats, while Democrats are estimated to win at least 210 seats. In several outstanding races, Republicans are ahead. However, some toss-ups have been breaking for Democrats, and on Saturday night, CBS News projected that Democrats flipped Washington state's 3rd Congressional District, a seat the GOP was favored to hold. There are currently 11 races that have not been called, and 10 of those seats are considered "battlegrounds." Of those remaining in battleground districts, five were rated as "toss ups," two were in the "likely Democrat" category, one was "leaning Democrat" and two were "leani...

State Legislatures: A Democratic Surge and a Republican Fizzle | Elections

One of the most surprising results in what had initially been billed as a red wave election was how strong Democrats were in state legislative races.By midday Wednesday, Democrats were expected to flip at least three chambers – both chambers in Michigan, plus the Minnesota Senate. In both states, the reelection of a Democratic governor on election night meant that Democrats would move into “trifecta” control, meaning they held the governorship as well as both legislative chambers.Meanwhile, Democrats by midday Wednesday were close to flipping the New Hampshire House and the Pennsylvania House, although it was unclear whether they could pull off either shift. For good measure, the Democrats have so far defended all of their vulnerable state legislative chambers. In the battle for the stat...

Decisions on Down-Ballot Races Loom Large for 2024 | Elections

In the crucial down-ballot races for secretary of state and attorney general – contests that could influence how the 2024 elections are administered – many of the candidates who expressed conspiracy theories about the 2020 election have lost, although key contests such as those in Arizona and Nevada remain to be decided. In this year’s secretary of state races, mainstream Republicans who faced credible Democratic competition tended to win. The winners included Brad Raffensperger, who rebuffed then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, and Iowa’s incumbent secretary of state, Paul Pate. But several Republican secretary of state candidates who expressed questions about the validity of the 2020 election lost to Democrats. These include Kim Crockett in Min...

Trump says he’ll make a “very big announcement” Nov. 15

Former President Donald Trump on Monday said he'll make a "very big announcement" on Nov. 15 from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He teased the announcement during a rally for Republican candidates in Dayton, Ohio."Not to detract from tomorrow's very important even critical election, and I would say in the strongest way it's a country-saving election ... I'm going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida," Trump said.As CBS News has previously reported, three Trump advisers and a Republican Party operative said Trump is considering announcing another bid for the White House in the weeks following Tuesday's midterms. GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville faces backlash for controversial comments on Democrats and crime

Washington — Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is coming under criticism for racially-charged comments he made this weekend claiming Democrats are "pro-crime" and favor reparations for the descendants of people who were enslaved in the U.S. because they believe "the people that do the crime are owed that."Tuberville, a first-term senator, made the controversial remarks during a rally held by former President Donald Trump in Minden, Nevada, on Saturday in support of the state's Republican candidates on the ballot in November."They're not soft on crime. They're pro-crime. They want crime," Tuberville said of Democrats. "They want crime because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have. They want reparations because they think the people that...

What to Watch on Election Night in Wisconsin | Elections

Wisconsin, one of the closest states in the past two presidential elections, will play host to several pivotal races during its Aug. 9 primary.Republican voters will choose their nominees to take on Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul, whose offices will be pivotal for determining the future of abortion policy in the state. If a state law passed in 1849 were to be reimposed, abortion would be banned in Wisconsin without exceptions for rape and incest. Evers and Kaul have gone to court to prevent this from happening, while the leading Republican candidates have touted their anti-abortion credentials in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade earlier this summer. After a series of candidates dropped out late in the primary season, Wisconsin Democrats...

What to Watch on Election Night in Michigan | Elections

Michigan will be one of the marquee states in this midterm election, with a combination of high stakes and stark divides between the two major parties.Three Democratic women elected in 2018 – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson – are all running for second terms. They have each played key roles in maintaining election standards against challenges by President Donald Trump following his narrow loss in the state in 2020. And Whitmer and Nessel have led the legal effort to keep a 1931 state law banning abortion from being reimposed after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.In November, Nessel and Benson will both face Republican nominees chosen in a party convention who are aligned with the party’s election-denying, Trump-ali...
