Republican lawmakers shy away from changing Montana’s constitutional right to abortion

Republican lawmakers in Montana wield a supermajority that gives them the power to ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment that would break the link between abortion rights and the right to privacy in the state's constitution. But so far, they haven't sought to ask voters to make the change, a rewrite that would allow lawmakers to ban or further restrict abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court gave that power back to the states last year. While 14 states have near-total bans on abortion since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year, Montana is one example of how, in some Republican-controlled states, the abortion policy battle will likely play out for a while. "This takes time," said Montana House Speaker Matt Regier, a Republican. "It took ...

Foot Found in Yellowstone Hot Pool, but Case Is Still Murky

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — A missing man whose foot was found floating in a Yellowstone hot pool had no suicide note in his car — though investigators have found his laptop computer, notebooks and handwritten poems, according to National Park Service documents released Tuesday. The law enforcement investigation documents posted online offered new details but no solid clues as to how Il Hun Ro, 70, of Los Angeles died — and how his foot, still in shoe, floated away — in Abyss Pool last summer.Yellowstone officials didn't immediately return an email message Tuesday asking about any new developments in the case. Park officials said earlier they didn't suspect foul play.More than 20 people have been killed by Yellowstone's geothermal pools, geysers, mudpots, steam vents and hot s...

Money Approved for States to Build Car-Charging Network

By GILLIAN FLACCUS and MATTHEW BROWN, Associated PressPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Biden administration said Wednesday it has approved ambitious plans by 34 states and Puerto Rico to create a national electric vehicle charging network as the U.S. begins in earnest its transition away from gas-powered transportation. The plans’ approval means $900 million can begin to flow to the states, which are tasked with using money from President Joe Biden’s huge infrastructure law to form the network of chargers across the nation. Building out a reliable and convenient network is critical to spur more adoption of the technology, which is itself key to reducing greenhouse emissions that cause global warming. The announcement came on the same day that Biden toured the North American International Auto Sh...

States tap historic surpluses for tax cuts and rebates to offset inflation hit on residents

Stoked by the largest surplus in state history, Missouri's Republican-led Legislature devised a $500 million plan to send one-time tax refunds to millions of households. In a shock to some, GOP Governor Mike Parson vetoed it. Parson's objection: He wanted a bigger, longer-lasting tax cut. "Now is the time for the largest income tax cut in our state's history," Parson declared as he called lawmakers back for a September special session to consider a $700 million permanent tax reduction. Upon the plan's likely approval, Missouri will join at least 31 states that already have enacted some type of tax cut or rebate this year — an astounding outpouring of billions of tax dollars back to the people. Idaho lawmakers are convening Thursday to conside...

Mobile home rents spike as wealthy investors buy trailer parks

For as long as anyone can remember, rent increases rarely happened at Ridgeview Homes, a family-owned mobile home park in upstate New York. That changed in 2018 when corporate owners took over the 65-year-old park located amid farmland and down the road from a fast-food joint and grocery store about 30 miles northeast of Buffalo. Residents, about half of whom are seniors or disabled people on fixed incomes, put up with the first two increases. They hoped the latest owner, Cook Properties, would address the bourbon-colored drinking water, sewage bubbling into their bathtubs and the pothole-filled roads. When that didn't happen and a new lease with a 6% increase was imposed this year, they formed an association. About half the residents launche...
