Biden Urges Consensus in Israel on Judiciary Plans as Protest Mounts

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden has called for wide agreement to be reached in Israel on sweeping changes to the judiciary pushed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hard-right government which have sparked nationwide protests.Israel's parliament may on Monday begin the legislation process of the judicial overhaul, which would increase the government's sway in selecting judges while weakening Supreme Court power to strike down laws or rule against the executive. The push has prompted nationwide protests and calls on the government to slow down and reach a broad agreement on its judicial plan, which polls have shown has relatively little support as it presently stands. In a response to a query by The New York Times, published on Sunday, Biden said:"The genius of American ...

BALATONOSZOD, Hungary (Reuters) - An elderly man in a community of Hasidic Jewish refugees from Ukraine lit the first candle of Hanukkah in their rescue shelter in Hungary, which is home to around 150 people on the shores of Lake Balaton.Saul Melamed, who first fled from Donetsk to Kyiv years before the Russian invasion, sang at the solemn candle lighting with families standing around as they celebrated their first Hanukkah away from their homeland."I think materially it is different here because in our home we had very beautiful Hanukkah of silver... but on the other hand here we have such a community, such a warm atmosphere of Hanukkah," Melamed said on Sunday, smiling."I'm still hoping to go back to Ukraine, I can't be as optimistic as to say that it will end till the next summer, it...

2024 GOP rivals court donors at big Las Vegas meeting, and some warn Trump is “a loser”

The Republican Party's nascent 2024 class, emboldened as ever, openly cast Donald Trump as "a loser" over and over on Friday as they courted donors and activists fretting about the GOP's future under the former president's leadership.Trump's vocal critics included current and former Republican governors, members of his own Cabinet and major donors who gathered along the Las Vegas strip for what organizers described as the unofficial beginning of the next presidential primary season. It was a remarkable display of defiance for a party defined almost wholly by its allegiance to Trump for the past six years."Maybe there's a little blood in the water and the sharks are circling," Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican presidential prospect himself and frequent Trump critic said in ...

But with corruption charges hanging over him and criticism mounting over his links to a rapidly growing far-right party he may depend on to form a government, surveys predict there will be no knock-out victory. For weeks, his "Bibi-bus" has be...
