Biden to receive updated Covid-19 booster shot Tuesday

Washington CNN  —  President Joe Biden will receive the updated Covid-19 booster shot Tuesday, White House assistant press secretary Kevin Munoz said Sunday evening. It has been more than three months since Biden contracted Covid-19, which is the amount of time the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people may consider waiting before getting boosted. The bivalent boosters target the original coronavirus strain as well as the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 subvariants. The shots are available for people ages five and up, as long as they have completed all primary doses in their vaccine series. People who are boosted have more protection against Covid-19 illness and even infection com...

Biden says it’s his ‘intention’ to run again in 2024

CNN  —  President Joe Biden said Friday that while he has not made a formal decision about running for reelection in 2024, it is his “intention” to do so. “The reason I’m not making a judgment about formally running or not running, once I make that judgment, a whole series of regulations kick in and I have to be – I treat myself as a candidate from that moment on. I have not made that formal decision, but it’s my intention – my intention to run again. And we have time to make that decision,” Biden told MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart in an interview at Delaware State University in Dover. The question of Biden’s political future will be front-and-center for Democrats after November’s midterm elections, i...

Four takeaways from Georgia governor’s debate

CNN  —  Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams sparred over health care, crime and punishment, and voting rights in a Monday debate as they made their closing arguments to voters in a reprise of their fiercely contested 2018 race for the same job. The stakes for this night were arguably higher for Abrams, who has trailed in most recent polling of the race. Kemp, one of the few prominent Republicans to resist former President Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen election in 2020, has positioned himself as a more traditional, pro-business conservative – a tack that his gentle resistance to Trump reinforced with swing voters. Abrams has argued that Kemp shouldn’t get any special credit for doing his j...

Vanderbilt Transgender Health Clinic suspends gender-affirming surgery for minors

CNN  —  Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s transgender clinic in Nashville has paused gender affirming surgeries for patients under the age of 18, a top executive at the center told a Tennessee lawmaker Friday. Republican Tennessee state Rep. Jason Zachary – who had asked VUMC to permanently end gender affirming surgeries for minors – posted a letter to Twitter he received from VUMC’s Chief Health System Officer, Dr. C. Wright Pinson. In the letter, Pinson informs the lawmaker that the nonprofit hospital is “pausing” gender affirmation surgeries on patients under age 18 while it reviews “new recommendations.” The move came amid pressure from Tennessee’s Republican leaders who sent ...

CNN  —  The vast majority of Americans of all ages, races, generations and backgrounds say the US has a mental health crisis. Nine in 10 Americans in a new survey from CNN and the Kaiser Family Foundation say the country as a whole is facing a crisis on this front and about half of adults say they’ve experienced a severe mental health crisis in their family. CNN published a series of stories this week based on the poll in conjunction with KFF. Read the main report here. And read this from CNN’s polling team about how the survey was conducted. There’s also 988 ...

Graham’s 15-week abortion bill further complicates Republican midterm messaging

CNN  —  Republican Senate candidates eager to make the 2022 midterms about inflation, crime and President Joe Biden’s first term have a new dilemma in Sen. Lindsey Graham’s bill that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The bill, which the South Carolina Republican introduced this week on a day of disappointing inflation news, presents his party with problems that are two-fold as they look to flip the House and Senate in November: Not only does it resurface the abortion debate, a topic many Republicans have sought to avoid since the Supreme Court, in a publicly unpopular decision, overturned Roe v. Wade in June, but it steps on the answers GOP candidates had coalesced around this summer – that abort...

Public health leaders say Biden administration’s monkeypox response isn’t enough

CNN  —  The limited supply of monkeypox vaccines in the US has led to hours-long waits and lines that stretch for blocks, according to officials with state and local public health groups; some people with monkeypox symptoms have had to go without tests or treatments. And some have even crossed the border into Canada in search of help, the officials say. They, along with leaders of some national LGBTQ organizations, are frustrated and angry at the federal government for its “lack of urgency” about the ongoing outbreak. They say they feel abandoned by the government and want monkeypox to be declared a public health emergency now. “We are, once again, in a moment where a lack of u...

Exercise more than recommended amounts for longest life, study says

CNN  —  A longer life may mean scheduling in even more than the recommended amount of weekly exercise, according to a new study. Adults should get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week, according to the World Health Organization. But people who surpass those levels live longer than those who don’t. Researchers analyzed more than 116,000 adults in a study published Monday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation. Participants self-reported their leisure time activity in qu...
