Bark N’ Roll provides mobile treadmill service, exercise to dogs in Los Angeles

SAN PEDRO, Calif. (KABC) -- Bark N' Roll is a mobile treadmill service for dogs. Owner Marc Cleary serves the South Bay area and most of Los Angeles County. The treadmills are inside his van where the dogs run. The runs last 30 minutes and dogs go at their own pace. They can run anywhere from less than a mile to up to five miles.Cleary says his love of dogs fueled this idea."We have a big coyote problem around here. People are scared to sometimes take their little dogs outside and then they don't get the exercise they need and then they can gain weight that they shouldn't have," Cleary said.Cleary says some owners use this service because they have busy lives or they're not able to physically walk their dog. Many people are not home as often, having returned to work after pandemic restric...

Exercise with chronic pain: Experts say to ‘go for it, but gently’

Exercise is a mood-booster for me — when I'm physically able to handle it.But I live with chronic pain, and it feels like many gym classes aren't well-suited to people like me, who can struggle to get through a regular 60-minute class. So for those of us with chronic pain who want to get moving, what are the options?Pain doesn't mean you shouldn't exerciseSome people with chronic pain are daunted by movement because they fear it might flare their pain (and yep, I can relate.)But the evidence-based view is that movement can actually help treat chronic pain, explains Thorlene Egerton, a physiotherapist and senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne."In days gone past we used to approach health problems by thinking we have to fix the health problem [and] take the pain away, before peopl...

Active (e.g. technique retraining and exercise therapy) and passive (foot orthoses, osteopathic manipulation) may reduce patellofemoral pain.Evidence Rating Level: 1 (Excellent)Although running is one of the most popular forms of exercise and provides significant health benefits, injury is common with the potential for prolonged periods of recovery. There is currently a need to provide an updated synthesis on prevention and management strategies of running injuries. As a result, the objective of the present systemic review of randomized controlled trials was to synthesize and critical...

Chronic ‘Exercise Deficiency’ Linked to HFpEF

Chronic lack of exercise — dubbed "exercise deficiency" — is associated with cardiac atrophy, reduced cardiac output and chamber size, and diminished cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in a subgroup of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), researchers say. Increasing the physical activity levels of these sedentary individuals could be an effective preventive strategy, particularly for those who are younger and middle-aged, they suggest. Thinking of HFpEF as an exercise deficiency syndrome leading to a small heart "flies in the face of decades of cardiovascular teaching, because traditionally, we've thought of heart failure as the big floppy heart," Andre La Gerche, MBBS, PhD, of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbour...
