‘Landmark moment’ or ‘PR exercise? What football thinks of new independent regulator
The UK government has announced plans for an independent regulator of English football aimed to better test potential new owners, ensure clubs are run sustainably and stop sides from joining breakaway leagues.
A fan-led review of football called for a regulator in November 2021 and after the government endorsed the proposal last year, it is preparing to launch a white paper on Thursday that has billed as a “radical transformation” of the rules governing the game.
The key recommendations are:
New tests for potential club owners and directors
Power to stop clubs joining breakaway competitions such as the European Super League
Supporters given a greater say in protecting club identity from changes — for example names, badges and home shirts
