TikTok ban in U.S. could be imposed by Biden administration if China-owned ByteDance doesn’t divest

The Biden administration wants TikTok's Chinese parent company to divest itself of the popular social media platform, or it could face a possible nationwide ban, TikTok confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal said the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS) had recently made the divestment request, and a TikTok spokesperson did not dispute that account. The Treasury Department, of which CFIUS is a part, declined to comment. The White House and National Security Council also declined to comment."If protecting national security is the objective, divestment doesn't solve the problem," TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan told CBS News in a statement. "The best way to address concerns about national security is with the transparent, U.S.-based protecti...

EPA proposes first national drinking water standard to address PFAS contamination

The Biden administration is proposing the first-ever national standard for six "forever chemicals" in drinking water,  the Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday. Per- and polyfluorinated substances are a group of compounds knowns as PFAS found in multiple water sources and can cause ailments like cancer, liver disease and more. The planned regulation would establish legally enforceable levels for six PFAS known to occur in drinking water and builds on previous EPA proposals and regulations, the agency said in a news release. The proposal, if finalized, would regulate two PFAS compounds as "individual contaminants," which would be regulated at four parts per trillion. Four other PFAS compounds would be deemed "a mixture," and would limit the combined levels of those s...

White House cybersecurity strategy pivots to regulation

The White House has unveiled a national cybersecurity strategy calling for comprehensive regulation of the nation's vital services, acknowledging in a 38-page blueprint that reliance on voluntary cybersecurity measures has stopped short of preventing billions in economic losses following a spike in ransomware attacks, as well as "inadequate and inconsistent outcomes" across critical infrastructure like energy pipelines, food companies, schools and hospitals. The new framework, led by the Office of the National Cyber Director in the White House, calls out China, Russia, Iran and North Korea for aggressive cyber tactics exhibiting "reckless disregard for the rule of law" and elevates ransomware attacks, such as the 2021 Russia-linked offensive on Colonial Pipeline, to issues of nat...

Tesla to open part of charging network to other EVs, as Biden officials announce latest steps in expansion of charging stations

Biden administration officials announced a significant step Wednesday in moving the U.S. toward a more expansive and cohesive network of EV charging stations.Part of the move includes a major concession from EV market leader Tesla, which owns and operates an extensive network of proprietary "superchargers" for its cars. But now, White House infrastructure coordinator Mitch Landrieu says the Elon Musk-led company has agreed to open part of its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles.  "These recent and new commitments will make more public chargers available for all EVs," Landrieu said Tuesday on a background call with reporters. 9 million Americans wrongly told they were approved for student debt forgiveness

About 9 million Americans with student loans who had applied for the Biden administration's student-debt forgiveness program mistakenly received emails last month that said their applications had been approved. The messages were part of updates the Department of Education issued in November to inform 16 million debt relief applicants that they had been approved to have up to $20,000 forgiven. But an additional 9 million people received emails saying they had received loan forgiveness when they had not been approved for relief because the process was halted due to legal challenges, according to officials. And others who hadn't yet applied for the student loan relief program also received the email. The error was made by Accenture Federal Services, a contractor with the Education ...

Appeals court temporarily pauses student loan forgiveness plan

A federal appeals court Friday is blocking President Biden's student loan forgiveness program. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay in response to an emergency motion brought by attorneys for several Republican-led states after a lower court ruled that their September lawsuit to stop the debt forgiveness program lacked standing. In their appeal, the plaintiffs — which include Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Carolina and Arkansas — said the forgiveness program will irreparably harm their states' student loan programs. "Missouri is harmed from the financial losses that the cancellation inflicts," the motion read.   They stay is not based on the merits, but allows for further briefings on the issue next week. This also c...
