Alberta should brace for fall flu and COVID-19 waves: Hinshaw

Alberta’s healthcare system is bracing for a combined wave of increased COVID-19 and influenza cases this fall and winter. “We do recognize that we’re going to get another flu season that is going to come in that will impact capacity, as well as potentially another wave of COVID,” Health Minister Jason Copping said Wednesday at an unrelated news conference. “We are putting plans in place to be able to manage that.”In a written statement, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said it’s “reasonable to expect” more respiratory viruses like influenza, RSV and COVID-19 to circulate in the fall and winter. For more than two years, Dr. Deena Hinshaw has been the face of Alberta’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s no denying this role has meant a lot of work and long days. And that has led to a significant bump in pay. As Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hinshaw has a salary of more than $360,000, but last year she brought home much more than that.Alberta’s sunshine list shows additional cash benefits totaling nearly $230,000. All added up, that is more than $590,000 in compensation.
