SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police officers in Sioux Falls exchanged gunfire with someone during a traffic stop Tuesday, leaving one person dead.
The Sioux Falls Police Department said an investigation into the shooting was being conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation.
The Sioux Falls Police Department said its officers and a deputy with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a traffic stop when at least one person “engaged” the officers with a firearm.
“Law Enforcement returned fire and one subject has been pronounced deceased,” the police department said in a statement.
The police department did not immediately say who died or what their role was in the shooting.
The shooting is the fifth in the city involving police in the last five months, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. Four of the 7 police shootings in the city over the last 12 months have also been fatal.
