It is the race of AI chatbots. With OpenAI spearheading innovation, other key players are not far behind. Google on Friday announced that its chatbot Bard will now be able to write software code. The development comes at a time when Alphabet Inc is facing stiff competition from OpenAI, the San Francisco-based AI powerhouse that is backed by Microsoft.

“Today, we’re updating Bard with the ability to help people with programming and software development tasks, including code generation, code debugging, and explanation,” Paige Bailey, a group product manager at Google Research wrote in a blog post.

Google has said that it has updated Bard with the ability to help professionals with programming and software development-related tasks which include, code generation, explanation, and debugging. The company in its official blog post said that ever since the chatbot was launched, coding has been one of the top requests that it got from users.

The programming and software development tasks and capabilities are being offered in over 20 programming languages including Go, C++, Java, Python, JavaScript and Typescript. Moreover, users will now be able to export Python code to Google Colab with ease. Besides, Bard will also be able to assist users with writing functions for Google Sheets.

Google said that apart from generating code, its chatbot will also be able to explain code snippets. According to the company, this facet will be helpful for those learning about programming for the first time or for those who may need additional support to understand the output of a particular block of code.

Interestingly, Bard can debug code and even the code that it wrote. “If Bard gives you an error message or code that doesn’t do what you intended, just tell Bard “this code didn’t work, please fix it,” and Bard can help you debug,” read the blog post.

While this is the latest addition to Bard’s capabilities, Google asserted that the chatbot was still an early experiment and that it is capable of producing codes that may simply not work. Regardless, Google is optimistic and foresees that Bard will be used as an essential tool for developers and creators.
