Fitness Freaks Complain Of Nuisance From Rash Drivers | Thane News

Thane: A group of fitness enthusiasts from Thane have complained of nuisance from rash drivers on certain popular stretches in the city including Hiranandani Meadows, Estate and Upwan, and are requesting authorities to take corrective action and avert a possible repeat of Worli mishap.
A team led by avid runner and activist Dr Mahesh Bedekar, met municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar and are also planning to meet the police commissioner Jaijeet Singh apprising them of the urgent need for having a safety mechanism in place for the fitness enthusiasts. The activists said they want few prominent stretches which are popular among morning walkers, joggers, sprinters and even cyclists to be barricaded for few hours before peak hours along with police presence to deter miscreants.
“There have been instances of motorists driving at high speed, often under the influence of alcohol and brushing against cyclists or runners, possibly just for fun on certain deserted stretches. Such incidents can someday lead to a major mishap and also deters enthusiasts especially the elderly from following their fitness schedule. We plan to launch a signature campaign and approach the authorities requesting dedicated lanes and police presence,” said Dr Bedekar.
Though no major incidents have been reported, activists said it was time to act before waiting for a mishap to occur.
Academician Narayan Barse, who cycles and sprints daily, shared personal experiences where motorists have shown scant regard for cyclists and runners on road. “Majority of the city roads don’t seem to be safe for cyclists or runners, joggers. Luckily, there has been no major mishap reported in Thane, mostly because we are alert. Though, we understand constraints of the administration, it would be helpful if lanes on certain roads would be dedicated for fitness enthusiasts daily,” he said. It may be noted that the Thane police and the corporation had reserved a lane of the newly constructed road near Kashinath Ghanekar auditorium for enthusiasts, who requested similar facilities elsewhere too.
