Charlo, Castano battle to draw in super welterweight showdown

Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano combated to a draw Saturday, rejecting either a historical success that would have crowned among them the very first 4 belt undeniable champ in boxing’s extremely welterweight department.

The face-off marked the very first time all 4 154-pound belts were on the line with Charlo keeping his 3 (WBC, WBA and IBF) and Castano maintaining the WBO strap as an outcome of the draw.

However the battle showed to be closer than anticipated with more-aggressive Castano showing he might take Charlo’s finest punch and provide heavy blows of his own, specifically in the center rounds at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Judges provided a split choice draw with one having it 114-113 for Argentina’s Castano, another 114-114 and the 3rd raised eyebrows by scoring it a one-sided 117-111 in favour of American Charlo.

Both fighters believed they won the bout, Charlo since he nearly tore down his competitor in the 2nd round and Castano since he managed the pace in the center rounds.

“A draw isn’t what I wanted to hear,” stated Charlo. “I won this fight. I hurt him a lot more. My power is serious. I had him in trouble in the second and 10th rounds.

“This is my very first time experiencing something like this. This comes with boxing — wins, losses and draws.”

Charlo was looking for the spectacular knockout, while Castano was the more patient of the two, using a combination of body and head shots to score.

“I won the battle. There were some rounds that he struck me hard, however I won the battle,” Castano stated of his easy however efficient tactical plan.

Charlo relocated to 34-1 with one drawn and 18 knockouts while Castano is now 17-0 with 2 drawn and 12 knockouts.

Charlo won his WBC crown over fellow American Tony Harrison in December 2019 — avenging his only profession defeat — and took the others last September with an eighth-round knockout of Dominican Jeison Rosario.

Castano beat Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira by consentaneous choice last February to declare the lower WBO crown.

Charlo’s twin bro Jermall is the unbeaten WBC middleweight champ.
