Scientists use Beethoven’s hair to study his DNA and uncover his health issues

Five locks of Ludwig van Beethoven's hair have been used to help uncover information about the German composer's health. Beethoven, who died in 1827, notably had several health problems and wanted his favorite physician, Dr. Johann Adam Schmidt, to give the public information on the disorder that caused his hearing loss. Schmidt ended up dying 18 years before Beethoven. But nearly two centuries later, researchers were able to study the composer's health, and published their peer-reviewed study in Current Biology. ...

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Wayne County Executive Warren Evans called for a public health state of emergency at the county’s juvenile jail during his State of the County address Tuesday evening.“The situation has become untenable for nearly 140 youths that are currently residing there. The order would also expedite therapeutic services to increase safety and security.A public health order has not yet been issued by the county's top health official or state.“But in the end, the most important action needed t...

Opinion | What parents can do to protect teens’ mental health from social media

If we are serious about addressing the alarming worsening of teens’ mental health, we must reduce their social media use.The connection is well-established. Abundant research has linked depression and self-harm to frequency of social media use. And a new study from the American Psychological Association shows that cutting back helps teens feel better. Companies are aware of this; Facebook executive-turned-whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed that the company’s own research found that use of their platforms was linked to anxiety, depression and body image issues in teens.Federal health data highlight why this is so crucial. In 2021, 42 percent of high school students reported feeling so sad or hopeless almost every day for at least two weeks that they stopped doing their usual activitie...

Illinois Health Officials Warn of Rise in Invasive Strep Infections; 5 Pediatric Deaths Reported – NBC Chicago

Illinois health officials are warning about a rise in dangerous strep throat cases, with at least five pediatric deaths reported so far in Illinois. The warning centers on the invasive group A strep throat. Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health have issued warnings surrounding the rise in cases. On March 10, IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra warned that cases of group A strep throat leading to severe complications were on the rise in Illinois, "with more cases reported in 2023 than in any of the past five years." “As COVID-19 cases and community levels remain stable, I want to share my concern about the growing number of strep throat cases in Illinois that are leading to severe complications,” Vohra said in...
