Art Review: Rothko Chapel in Houston Is Reverential & Otherworldly

NRPLUS MEMBER SHORT ARTICLE

T
he Rothko Chapel in Houston opened 50 years earlier, on the weekend of February 26, 1971. Great deals of occasions are prepared throughout the year to commemorate and contextualize it, and deservedly so. The small structure is not embellished by Mark Rothko’s last work, because “decorated” recommends that the art enhances the chapel. Rather, the structure is a simple phase for a suite of spiritual paintings, though “religious” isn’t exact, either. You won’t discover angels on the walls, or divinities of any kind, and don’t go there to get the answer. Rather, the paintings are extremely spiritual. “Intense” and “spiritual” appear right.
